Aaron Leakey is an experienced family mediator with a history of training and instruction in family justice at the justice institute of BC (JIBC) and BC Ministry of Attorney General (BC MAG) and is currently the Manager of Training at Mediate BC. He holds a Masters of Dispute Resolution (MAdr) from the University of Victoria and a Masters of Divinity (Mdiv) through Regent College, and is a certified Family Relations Mediator – Advanced through Family Mediation Canada. Aaron specializes in family violence, high-conflict disputes, family coaching, financial issues, and the way that cultural considerations impact the design of family dispute resolution. In the role of instructor (family justice) at the Justice Institution of BC, Aaron delivered courses on topics that range from family violence, substance use and mental health, culture and access to justice, and financial issues post-separation. Aaron writes articles for mediation websites and academic journals, and is a frequent presenter at academic conferences on topics of family justice, ethics, power imbalances in mediation, self-reflective practice, access to justice, and the application of decolonial thinking to mediation practice. Aaron has a history of training with conflict resolution organizations, non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and governments on conflict resolution, dispute system design, and family justice. Aaron currently holds a research fellowship at the BC Access to Justice Center for Excellence (ACE) and is completing a PhD in Law and Society at the University of Victoria (UVic) where he studies the intersection of law, dispute resolution, access to justice, and institutional design. Currently, Aaron is working on publications related to the design of justice systems, including his current work on justice as a “process, present, and presence” (forthcoming).
