The Elder Mediation Journey – From Start to Finish

A 21-hr comprehensive resource for working with older people, and/or their families and support networks – from the initial conversations to the final agreement.

Course description: This intensive, skill building course will heighten the skills and knowledge of participants from their first conversation to the end of the last session where people have committed to following through on particular tasks and agreements. An actual case will serve as the template for guiding effective, elder mediation techniques and strategies from the first point of contact to goodbye and follow up.

Who Should Attend: Individuals working towards their elder mediation certification, certified elder mediators requiring annual maintenance hours, specialists in age-related fields wishing to learn more about the actual delivery of elder mediation services.    

Prerequisite: Participants should have completed at least a beginning or introductory level of elder mediation training.

Course goals: The goal of this course is to provide participants with a practical framework for delivering elder mediation services.

Learning outcomes

  • How to conduct a person-centered, professional, ethical, safe, and participant focussed conversation during Elder Mediation, where sensitivities are highlighted and practised.
  • Increased appreciation for Elder Mediation qualifications: being mindful of the distinct roles, values & sensitivities required.
  • Learn how to conduct a successful Elder Mediation with an awareness of the skills, process and stages involved.
  • Acquire strategies for dealing with self-doubt and resistance.
  • Heightened awareness of the intergenerational nuances at play in elder mediation.
  • Increased awareness of legal considerations and legal referrals
  • Eliminate ageist discourse while promoting intergenerational understanding.
  • Learn evidence-based strategies to help participants shift from resistance to realizing their potential.

Dates: Seven, 3-hr sessions on Monday evenings from 3:30 – 6:30 PM ET

  • November 3, 10, 17, 24 (2025)
  • December 1, 8, 15

Cost: $750.00 (FMC/EMIN Members*)no tax

          $900.00 (Non-Members)

*General Membership with FMC is $140/year; anyone can join as a General Member

Presenter:  Judy Beranger is recognized as a world leader in the field of Elder Mediation. She is an inspiring and knowledgeable trainer and was the drafter of the Code of Ethics for Elder Mediators internationally. She has been involved with every subsequent update and helped write an additional supporting document: Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults. Judy developed the entire Elder Mediation Certification framework and process for Elder Mediators and did so over a two-year period with input from hundreds of people from a variety of countries along with Family Mediation Canada (FMC), other organizations, networks, and Societies. Judy is a Past-President of FMC and Past-President of the Elder Mediation International Network (EMIN).
