He was director of the family courts services in Santa Cruz County for 17 years and has mediated over 5\,000 custody disputes. He is the author of the classic text\, Mediating Child Custody Disputes: A Strategic Approach (1983/1998 Rev.\, Jossey-Bass/Wiley)\, co-author of Splitting America: How Politicians\, Super Pacs and the News Media Mirror High Conflict Divorce (2012\, HCI Press) and co-author of The Child Support Solution: Unhooking Custody from Support (2019\, CSS Press). He serves on the Editorial Boards of several international journals of conflict resolution\, is Editor-in-Chief of the Academy of Professional Family Mediators’ publications and has published extensively in the professional literature on divorce mediation and child psychology. DESCRIPTION:The Family Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario (FDRIO) and Family Mediation Canada (FMC) are pleased to present their jointly-hosted Conference: Foundations to Mastery.  This dynamic conference will be held on November 16\, 2020 and will provide a premier training opportunity for family dispute resolution professionals at all levels of development. Proposals for conference sessions are welcome from family law dispute resolution professionals: mediators\, arbitrators\, parenting coordinators; lawyers\, mental health professionals\, and financial practitioners and academics and researchers focused on family dissolution.\nThe Conference will provide an array of topics that will reinforce best practices\, explore current and cutting edge issues\, and enhance family law dispute resolutions professionals’ practices. The programming will include a variety session types\, including break out\, lecture style and hands on exercises and should cater to professionals at all levels of practice\, ranging from those beginning their FDR careers to experts in the family dispute resolution field. \n \nANNOUNCING OUR 2020 KEYNOTE SPEAKER!\n\nMOYA TEKLU\nADDRESSING ANTI-BLACK RACISM\nMoya Teklu\, B.A. (York) 2005\, J.D. (Toronto) 2009\, was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2010. She is a member of Legal Aid Ontario’s General Counsel’s Office and Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto – Faculty of Law. She is responsible for developing Legal Aid Ontario’s Racialized Communities Strategy and leading the creation of the Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC). She regularly delivers training on anti-racism\, unconscious bias\, access to justice\, and cultural competence to judges\, justices of the peace\, lawyers\, adjudicators and regulators across the province and country. Moya has also worked as a Human Rights and Health Equity Specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital and Policy Research Lawyer at the African Canadian Legal Clinic. She has participated in proceedings before the Supreme Court of Canada\, the Federal Court\, the UN Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination\, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child\, and the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario. She is a member of the Equity Advisory Group at the Law Society of Ontario.

This first webinar will introduce you to neuroscience and trauma. We will focus on the basic brain functions\, the brain during conflict\, brain communication and an introduction to neuromodulators. \nWebinar 2\, Wednesday\, Feb. 26 – 1:30 PM ET: Understanding high conflict in the heart: Insecure and fearful adult attachment patterns.\nThe second webinar will focus on adult attachment (from cradle to grave)\, adult attachment patterns\, primary and secondary emotions and the association of fearful attachment and conflict. \nWebinar 3\, Wednesday\, March 25 – 1:30 PM ET:  When mediators get stuck in high conflict: Moving from neutrality to multi-partial alliances.  The third webinar will illustrate patterns of disengagement with high conflict parents.  We will focus on multi-partial alliances and empathy\, engagement and emotional clarity to connect with clients. \nWebinar 4\, Wednesday\, April 29 – 1:30 PM ET: Reflections on working with families involved in high conflict: Lessons from neuroscience\, conflict resolution and decision making in mediation   Based on a summary from the first three webinars\, this final webinar will be an interactive session with participants to consider practical strategies to connect neuroscience\, conflict resolution and decision making in mediation.
